Abattoir Swamp Management Committee

In May 2021 Mitchell River Group signed a management agreement with Mareeba Shire Council to take over the ongoing management of a remnant wetland known as Abattoir Swamp.

The wetland is located on the Molloy - Mossman Road and is one of the few publicly-accessible reserves of its type in the area.

Renowned in times past as an excellent bird-watching destination, the wetland has suffered a steady decline in condition over the past decade.

Council invested in a new boardwalk to the birdhide, and was also instrumental in securing funding for a partial excavation of the lagoons in front of the hide. However, extensive work remains to bring the wetland back to its vibrant potential.

A volunteer management committee has carriage of day-to-day operations, including:

• developing a management plan
• undertaking fundraising
• improving amenities and signage, and
• coordinating routine upkeep and maintenance.
